DJ’s, a creative unit, run by Tony and Deeya Singh have always produced shows with novel concepts and unique execution that have brought a revolution in the TV industry. Now, they have come up with another show ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’ on Star plus, which is an adaptation of the international series ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. Here is what Deeya had to share about the show.

What made you to adapt an American show?
Basically, we’ve done a couple of adaptations before. In fact, we are the only company to have done adaptations of foreign serials and have done it successfully. The idea was that everyone loves these and it has a universal appeal. It’s about a guy who gets caught between his wife and his mother and we thought this is something that would really appeal to the Indian audience and hence decided to adapt this show.

Tony Singh and Deeya SinghWhat made you intrigued towards ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’?
All the other serials have clashes between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, whereas this is a comedy. In mainstream television, we did not have a sitcom from very long time and we feel that people have almost forgotten such stuff these days when such shows are just delegated to one channel. These things are very important and the fact that this kind of show has not been done in India before made it very appealing to us.

Are there any changes in the script or is it being made the same way?
No. It’s adapted very intensely. In fact, our characters have been worked upon in a desi way that the American consultants told us that they couldn’t recognise some of the episodes as their own since it has become so Indian and they felt it was better than theirs. We culturally adapted theirs but it turned out to be interesting because we had so many things that we could play with which they couldn’t.

What made you choose Namit Das as Sumit?
I think the combination of being able to understand humour, coming from the background of theatre and since he has never been seen on TV, making him relatively fresh made us decide on him. We had no baggage associated with him.

Do you feel Indian viewers will welcome this show with open heart?
I'm really hoping they do. One thing is they should get used to this idea because the style is very different. We are doing only indoors. It is very different compared to what generally people are used to. So, when they get an idea of what it is, they will start loving it as they will find the whole family very relatable. I think they will like the humour a lot and they will find it very enjoyable. After a dose of drama, it will be good for the family to come together and watch this.

Can we expect Tony to direct a few episodes of ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’?
He's not the director but he always has a strong take and point of view. We are creators and we don't physically direct a show, but he has something to do with every process of the series. He contributes by working on the scripts, sharing with actors what he feels and working with directors. He is the one who suggested Parmeet Sethi, Shashant Shah and Deven Bhojani. We have three very senior directors and he works closely with them. I don't think he would direct it.

Sometimes the story changes as per viewer’s choice and doesn’t go the way writer or director wants. Will this show undergo a change too if needed?
No, we have almost finished shooting the series and we can't do any changes, which is a good thing. First time we believe in something, when we shoot it, if it works, it is good, if it doesn't, we can't do anything about it.

What's in store for the fans with this show?
God willing, they will get to see comedy that they have never seen before.

Something about your future projects?
We are doing a show for SAB TV called ‘Police Factory’.
