Hyderabad: If you thought Tamil superstar Rajinikanth’s market is waning after two flops ‘Vikramasimha’ and ‘Lingaa’ just think again. His upcoming multilingual film ‘Kabali’ has set new records even before the tentative release of the film on July 15 after Tamil producer S Dhanu reportedly pocketed more than Rs 150 crore, including Rs 30 crore from TS, AP, to establish a new pre-release business record in South.

“It’s true that Rajini is breaking records even before the release of his much-hyped action adventure revolving around an ageing don. In fact, it rocked social media by attracting maximum number of likes online for its first look and trailer, and even the songs are captivating,” says director Sunil Kumar Reddy, who claims that being a sequel of Rajini’s earlier blockbuster ‘Baasha’ is another reason for this euphoria.

Highlights:

  • Tamil superstar Rajinikanth’s charisma is on a new high as his upcoming film ‘Kabali’ is reportedly sold for more than 150 crore, including 30 crore from TS and AP alone
  • Clearly outwitting pre-release business of Rajamouli’s magnum opus ‘Baahubali’ which was traded off for 100 to 110 crore across the world

“Rajini’s anger-driven role in ‘Baasha’ is still etched in the minds of the viewers, so it’s sequel is bound to be lapped up by diehard fans as well as Gen Y viewers,” he adds.

Distributors who are betting big on Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’, even though his earlier two films ‘Kochadaiyan’ and ‘Lingaa’ tanked at the box office, are confident of recovering their investments and have begun negotiating with hundreds of theatres in TS, AP to release it in as many screens as possible.

“‘Kabali’ will surely draw sensational openings in the two Telugu States since Rajinikanth’s charisma is still intact and happening and it is expected to be released in more than 1,000 theatres since we want to reach out to his expanding fan following,” says distributor Vasu of Guntur.

Another distributor Bharat Bhushan of Telangana rules out any obstacles for its release in the two Telugu States. “We heard that there are a few issues with his past films but Rajini’s juggernaut is unstoppable, since hundreds of theatres in Telangana are chasing us to screen the film,” adds Bharat.

Summing up the euphoria, distributor Prabhakar of Nellore adds “Director Ranjith who is on a hat-trick with ‘Kabali’ after back-to-back hits ‘Atta Katthi’ and ‘Madras’, has etched a larger-than-life role for Rajini. We are also proud that Telugu editor Rajendra Prasad has done a fabulous job in ‘Kabali’. Actually, more than two decades ago, ‘Baasha’s success made Rajini a household name among Telugu viewers and ‘Kabali’ will take him a few notches up,” he concludes.
