Salman’s Sultan beats Aamir’s Dangal on Day 1

Dangal, which casts Aamir as Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, earned Rs 29.78 crore in India on its opening day while Salman’s Sultan had grossed Rs 36.54 crore on the opening day. Dangal released on December 23.
"Dangal has got a terrific opening of Rs 29 crore and it will continue to grow. It will sustain due to the word of mouth publicity. There is a possibility that it might touch the Rs 100-crore mark over the weekend. The film will have its own shelf life. It will run for multiple weeks and might even break the record of Rajkumar Hirani's PK,” exhibitor Akshay Rathi said.
Sultan reportedly collected Rs 18 crore in the first weekend and its total collection worldwide stood at a whopping Rs 584.25 crore. Akshay Rathi insists that Aamir, 51, considered to be a methodical actor, does not evoke mass hysteria like Salman, 50.
"Salman has a huge fan following. People primarily go to watch his film because of him. Aamir is not a mass star but his name is associated with great content and quality cinema. His films are entertaining and engaging and the audience loves this combination," Akshay Rathi said.
Dangal reportedly released in 5,300 screens - 4,300 in the domestic market and 1,000 overseas. Sultan was released in 5,100 screens - 4,100 in India and 1,000 in the international market.
Reports suggest that Sultan, which released on July 6, was made at an estimated budget of Rs 90 crore, including Rs 20 crore on print and publicity. The budget of Dangal is estimated to be Rs 70 crore.
