In an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, Driver reflected on his role as Kylo Ren, the son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and why he decided to take the part. "I mean, I was against — and still am to a large extent — Hollywood movies.

They are generic, a lot of money." Adam made the decision to star in the movie regardless of the budget because, "JJ (Abrams, who directed) described it as a family drama. It was an opportunity to work in something that was big, but felt personal to him and myself."
