In the last three months, T-town witnessed lover boys of different shades who made a killing at the box-office. Varun Tej played a sophisticated lover boy in ‘Fidaa and woos the girl by respecting her viewpoint and feelings. In contrast, rebellious Vijay Devarakonda falls in love with his junior medical student(Shalini) at first sight and aggressively pursues his love in ‘Arjun Reddy, while Nani played a boy-next-door who prefers academics over his love but later realises his folly.

Nevertheless, all the three heroes garnerned more than Rs 60 crore(net collections) in AP, TS in the span of 70 to 80 days, inspiring filmmakers to think out-of-the-box. “It is true that contrasting lover boys swept audience off their feet this season,” says director Madhura Sreedhar, who claims that every director has his own style in making a love story. ‘Sekar Kammula is known for his tender and softer love stories, while Sandeep Vanga weaved a story around an energetic and angry-young man in ‘Arjun Reddy. Whereas happening star Nani was in his elements an as adorable loverboy in ‘Ninnu Kori,’ he adds.

However, Madhura Sreedhar attributes success of these love stories to their strong content. “Well-made and heart-touching romances always work wonders at the box-office and a few films even remain in the minds of the viewers for years,’ he concludes. Whereas, another leading director Bheemaneni Srinivas Rao, sounds a word of caution, “No doubt, love stories look safe bet on paper, however, they need to be properly dealt with.

Hero and heroine characterisations have to be well-etched out and the conflict between them should be realistic and justified. Even the re-union between enstranged lovers has to be logical, only then, it can strike a chord with viewers. ‘Fidaa’ and ‘Ninnu Kori’ were loaded with family emotions and attracted family audience in large numbers.

On the other hand, ‘Arjun Reddy’ became a sensation among youth, students and masses,” he adds. Nevertheless, this season marked the comeback of ace director Sekhar Kammula and brought two young directors Shiva Nirvana and Sandeep Vanga into the spotlight.
