The crime came to light when the girl approached an NGO, seeking support following the sexual assault by her father, Venkata Satyanarayana, a tailor in Risala Bazaar. The girl’s teacher sought the help of Bollaram police, who immediately detained Satyanarayana. The girl said that she was being abused for the past three years. Following a complaint lodged by representatives of the NGO, police registered a case under Section 376 (Rape) of the Indian Penal Code and took up investigation.
