Hyderabad: There has been an increase in the number of cases related to drunken driving this year, when compared to 2013. The traffic police have been booking at least 1,000 cases every month during this year.

According to official statistics, 10,813 cases were booked in 2012 and 13,390 in 2013. However, this year it has already touched 10,458 mark. During the last two years, the total amount collected in the form of penalties was Rs 2 crore. This year it has already crossed Rs 1.31 crore.

On an average, 12,000 drives are being conducted throughout the Hyderabad City Commissionerate limits, which the police claim, has helped in controlling the nuisance in each weekend. “Most of them who are caught are the new ones. There are very few who repeat the offence,” said Jitender, Additional Commissioner (Traffic). According to the official, most of the offenders are the people who drive two-wheelers. They are less aware of the drive the police conduct, during the night. He explained that the Traffic Police are extensively conducting the drive during night at various points across the city.

However, some point out that the booking of cases, court appearances, penalties and jail are proving to be of less deterrent. For the last two years, the cases of drunken driving have crossed 10,000 mark with an average of 30 cases per day. As per the statistics, about 50 percent of the violations are done by youngsters aged between 21 and 30 years. Amongst the 9,631 cases booked by the police, 4,369 were of this age group, while 2,922 cases were of the age group 30 to 40 years. Some 13 women were also caught this year for drunken driving, while their number was 12 and 4, during 2013 and 2012. 1,746 persons were sent to jail, the highest so far. About controlling drunken driving more seriously, the police appear to be positive about the Central government's Draft Bill, which favours stringent punishment to offenders.

“All the State governments were asked to send their opinion. After discussing it with RTA officials, we shall be sending our opinion,” said the Additional Commissioner.
