Visakhapatnam: Prohibition and Excise Deputy Commissioner C Vivekananda Reddy suspended Circle Inspector of Narsipatnam for pilferage of over 12,000 kg of ganja worth Rs 6 crore which was seized from the smugglers in the agency from time to time.Ganja is stored in the excise stations in different places according to the jurisdiction of the seizure, until the cases are disposed in the courts. Sources said Narsipatnam excise station alone stored over 30,000 kg of which 12,000 kg was missing. “We made a surprise check on the stock and found 12,000 kg missing and immediately placed Circle Inspector A Jaganmohan Rao under suspension pending inquiry,” said Deputy Commissioner.
Ganja selling is a lucrative trade carried out in the agency with the connivance of both police and excise officials. Traders from all over the country including women from middle class are descending on the agency in expensive cars and taking away huge stocks. The turnover is said to be around Rs 1,000 crore per annum.
Sources said the seized ganja was being sold back to the smugglers as there have been no regular checks at the stock points. The officials also take advantage of natural withering away of the weed due to long storage.“The natural reduction in the stock is minimal. What we found today was huge,” Deputy Commissioner said.
