Visakhapatnam: Nine CPI (Maoist) armed militia members surrendered before Superintendent of Police (SP) Koya Praveen at the District Police Office here on Saturday. The members said that they were tired of the Maoist ideology.

The surrendered members are Kondus - a tribal from Bonthuvalasa hamlet, Pedavalasa Panchayat of G K Veedhi mandal in the Agency. These militia members used to work with the Maoists in works like supplying kitchen material and newspapers, distribution of pamphlets and creating road blocks. These members are also wanted for arson as they were involved in a famine raid on the house of J Balaraju at Chaparathipalem, Somalingam Padal andRaju Padal, apart from destroying of coffee pulping unit at Pedavalasa, damaging a wine shop at Pedavalasa in 2013 and stealing coffee crop near Chaparathipalem in 2015.

Speaking to media persons, SP Koya Praveen said that relief and rehabilitation measures will be taken as per the government rules. He called upon the Maoists to join the mainstream and assured that there will be no harassment from police. The surrendered members include armed militia commanders Killo Gopal Rao, Marri Ranga Rao and Korra Lassu, ex-deputy commander Korra Samba, and militia members Ganta Sreenu, Killo Bhaskar Rao, Korra Bhaskar Rao, Pangi Sattibabu and Gunta Nageswara Rao.
