Hyderabad: A 32-year-old businessman from Erragadda who wanted a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ticket for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls attempted suicide at the office of Jubilee Hills MLA Maganti Gopinath on Sunday.

The victim, Mustaq Shareef (32), along with some residents of Netaji Nagar, went to the Jubilee Hills MLA’s office to discuss about allocation of flats to the residents under the 2BHK housing scheme of the State government.
While the discussion was still on, Shareef attempted suicide by consuming cough syrup mixed with cockroach killing liquid. He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors treating Shareef told that he was out of danger.
During police questioning, Shareef confessed to have visited the MLA’s office to discuss about housing allocation and attempted suicide after denied a party ticket to contest GHMC polls.
Gopinath reacted on the incident and told the media that Shareef met him first time hardly about 15 days ago and introduced himself as a social worker. Shareef expressed interest in joining the party and also even sought a ticket to contest in GHMC polls for Erragadda division, the MLA said.
The MLA said that Shareef submitted a letter stating that he had threat from other political workers. He was asked to wait for some days as declaration about reservation in the divisions was yet to be announced, the MLA added.
