Sri Lanka\'s National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has started working on protecting children who have been subject to abuse, as over 10,000 child abuse cases were reported last year in the island-nation.

Colombo: Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has started working on protecting children who have been subject to abuse, as over 10,000 child abuse cases were reported last year in the island-nation.

The NCPA said that it received 10,732 complaints of different forms of child abuse during 2015.

Among the complaints reported in 2015, the highest number of complaints was related to cruelty towards children reports the Lanka Page website.

The other grave cases involved the deprivation from compulsory education, cases of sexual harassment, rape and neglection of children.

The NCPA has requested the public to make complaints on any kind of child abuse or child right violations via hotline 1929 which is a 24 hour toll free number.
