Karimnagar: The wife of a deceased farmer, Vakiti Anjali, attempted suicide by dousing herself with kerosene at the District Collectorate here on Thursday.

Anjali was participating in a dharna at the Collectorate, organised by Telangana Farmers’ JAC demanding compensation to farmers, who committed suicides unable to clear debts. She suddenly picked up a kerosene tin brought along with her and doused herself. The police present there reacted sharply and foiled her attempts.

Anjali’s husband, Laxmaiah borrowed Rs 7 lakh from private moneylender to cultivate crops and trapped in debts as he failed to get proper yield. Unable to bear the mounting pressure from the money lenders for repayment, he committed suicide two years ago.

Anjali alleged that the government officials, who promised to pay compensation to her at the time of her husband death, didn’t provide any financial support.

She appealed the District Collector for help several times but in vain. Upset over the officials’ apathy, she decided to end her life since it became tough for her to run the family and provide education to her two sons.

It was learnt that Laxmaiah ended his life before government extended the cut-off date of financial support to the deceased farmers.
