Vijayawada: The officials of Customs Preventive Commissionerate have taken a person into custody at Rajahmundry on Tuesday for smuggling 5.3 kg gold in form of granules in a compressor of water purifier. The value of gold is estimated at Rs 1.45 crore.

Addressing the media persons here, Customs Commissioner S Khader Rahman said that a B Sc graduate from Chennai, who was a carrier, collected the purifier at Kolkata Airport and was arrested following a tip off at Rajahmundry Station.

“We raided a person, who claimed to be selling water purifiers. After thorough checking of water purifier and its compressor, we found the gold granules. It is also learnt that there are many such water purifiers, which are used to smuggle gold and would track them soon,” he said.

Of late there is an increase in gold smuggling cases and so far only carriers are caught. As many as 12 persons were arrested in various cases of gold smuggling and 12 kilos of gold was seized from their possession. However, this is the biggest catch in the State and the carrier was produced before Economic
Offences Court in Hyderabad.
