Hyderabad: A legislator’s driver was killed in a freak mishap at Old MLA Quarters in on Tuesday when the gun belonging to a security officer of Narsapur MLA went off. The security officer was taken into custody on charges of causing death by negligence.

Akbar, a native of Veldanda village, had been working as a driver for Narsapur MLA Ch Madan Reddy for a long time and was closely associated with the MLA for the past 15 years. As Akbar was not attending to duties for the past three days, the services of another driver Venkat were being used.

On Tuesday, at around 2.15 pm, Akbar and Venkat, along with MLA’s gunman Ravinder and another security officer Pandu were taking rest at the waiting room allotted for them on the ground floor of the MLA Quarters building at Hyderguda.

During conversation among the four persons, Venkat eagerly took Ravinder’s gun into his hands and returned it to him after getting a feel of it. Meanwhile, Akbar also asked Ravinder to give him the weapon, but Ravinder denied. During the scuffle, the weapon went off as it was preloaded, said Central Zone DCP V B Kamalasan Reddy.

“Akbar asked Ravinder to give the weapon and mishandled it. When a scuffle occurred while taking back the weapon, the gun went off and the bullet went through the chest of Akbar,” the DCP said adding the range was so near and Akbar succumbed to the bullet injury on the spot.

Akbar’s family members who were shaken with the news, rushed to the spot. “For the past five months, he (Akbar) has been complaining to us that they wanted to remove him from duty. They would have done something,” alleged Akbar’s aunt Rashida.

However, the police denied the allegations and said they had recorded the statements of the witnesses and they would produce the evidences before the court. “There were two witnesses on the spot. Gunman Pandu and Venkat, Narsapur MLA’s another driver, were present. We have recorded the statements of witnesses and taken the gunman Ravinder into custody.

He is not permitted to handover the service weapon to private persons,” Kamalasan Reddy added. The Narayanguda police registered a case against Ravinder under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of IPC and action will be initiated against Ravinder, according to the DCP.
