Hyderabad: The Task Force Police on Thursday busted a Uttar Pradesh-based attention diversion and theft gang and recovered Rs 40,000 from the accused.

On a tip-off, the sleuths of the Central Zone Task Force apprehended two persons hailing from Meerut at Saifabad. The duo was involved in five cases of theft by diverting the attention of public and stealing mobile phones from cars.

Waseem Saleem Qureshi (23) and Shakeel Saleem Qureshi (24), both brothers from Meerut, along with their associate Mohammed Asif (20), used to come to Hyderabad and stay in lodges posing as businessmen.

“They would target the people using costly mobile phones while driving the cars and follow them. One of the accused would move closer to the car and knock on the left side of the car and shout at the driver, pointing towards his feet.

When the driver lowers the window pane, the other accused would knock on the other side of the car and divert his attention. Taking advantage of this, the accused standing on the left side of the car would steal the mobile phone and flee from the place,” said Task Force DCP B Limba Reddy.
