Hyderabad: Three labourers were killed at KPHB when an under-construction arch caved in on Tuesday. The incident happened, hours after the collapse of a two-storeyed building at Chilkalguda, burying two persons alive on Monday.

The incident on Tuesday happened at CB-CID Colony at Vasanth Nagar of KPHB Colony when workers were constructing an entrance arch at the gated community locality. Due to continuous rain and hail in the city for the past few days, the arch collapsed, it is said.

Five persons, including three labourers, came under debris of the arch and suffered grievous injuries. The local people and police rescued five labourers trapped under the debris and shifted them to a nearby hospital. Three of them died while undergoing treatment, said officials.

The deceased were identified as Nagabhushanam, Janardhan and Dharma Rao. They were daily wage earners. All of them hailed from Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials, in a statement, said the gated community did not seek permission to build the arch.

GHMC Commissioner Janardhan Reddy ordered an inquiry into the issue and asked Zonal Commissioner B V Gangadhar Reddy to submit a detailed report at the earliest.

The police began an inquiry into the collapse of a building, which claimed two lives at Chilakalaguda on Monday night. According to police, there were two shops on the ground floor of the ill-fated building.

In fact, the GHMC had issued notice for demolition of the building citing that it was unfit for occupancy. One Akbar was running a chicken shop and another person a stationery store.

At around 9.45 pm, while Akbar and his associates Wajid and Ahmed were about to leave the building, it suddenly came down. The trio were trapped under the debris for a long time.

With the help of local people, the officials rescued them and rushed them to Gandhi hospital for treatment. Akbar (30) and Wajid (25) died while undergoing treatment.

The GHMC officials had reportedly identified 16 rickety building to be demolished. The GHMC officials had in fact asked the shop-keepers at the ill-fated building to vacate, so that the structure could be pulled down. But, before the officials took action, the structure caved in.
