Tirupati: One person died and four others were injured in a LPG cylinder blast at a house located in KB Layout here in the early hours of Sunday.According to police, the incident occurred at about 4.30 am due to the leakage of the gas cylinder leading to the death of Yerraiah an LIC employee and injuring his wife Reddamma (41) and daughter Sharmila, a medicine student.

Sharmila after sensing a gas leak, alerted her father who was asleep. He came to the portico of the first floor of the house where the cylinder was kept. But the explosion ripped apart Yerraih’s body. The impact of the blast was so severe that neighbours were rudely awaked with the loud noise.

Reddamma and Sharmila too suffered severe burns in the explosion. Intensity of the blast was so great that portico portion of the building was damaged and the blast impact was felt by the nearby residents as well. The injured were initially admitted to SVRR Government Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Chennai.

Yerraih’s son Dhanjay and another daughter who were in the house had a narrow escape. However, they sustained minor injuries and were undergoing treatment in a private hospital here. Yerraih, who was working in Kuppam branch of LIC, came home for weekend to be with his family. A case has been registered. Investigation is on to ascertain the reason behind this blast.
