Hyderabad: A bus travelling from Shirdi to Hyderabad caught fire at Humnabad town in Bidar district of Karnataka on Friday morning claiming the life of a 3-year-old child and injuring five others.

The sleeper coach belonging to Kaveri Travels caught fire from the engine at around 6 am when the passengers were still asleep.

There were around 30 passengers in the AC bus, all bound for Hyderabad. Seven more passengers also were injured in the accident.

The injured were treated at a hospital in Humnabad and they are out of danger. It is said that a family from Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh but settled in Hyderabad in their hurry to escape from the fire left behind their 3-year old child Vihan in the bus. The boy died due to severe burn injuries.

Of the 30 members who were traveling, three persons - Nagalakshmi, Divya and Varakumar - who sustained burn injuries were shifted to a private hospital in Hyderabad.

Police and fire fighters from Humnabad were rushed to the spot. They controlled the fire within minutes, said police inspector Dattatreya
Karnad.

According to eye witnesses, the passengers alerted the driver after they noticed the fire at the rear end of the bus. The driver tried to open the doors but they got jammed.

People from a nearby dhaba broke the window glasses and helped the passengers to jump out. But the three-year-old child went unnoticed and was left behind. An investigation has been ordered into the incident and the police have also registered a case.

Telangana Transport Minister Mahender Reddy expressed shock over the incident and has assured medical aid to those admitted to the hospital. He directed officials to bring the passengers home safely.

As the bus registration number was PY 01 CK 9522, it was suspected that some miscreants had indulged in rioting in Karnataka.

However, Bidar district SP Prakash Nigam confirmed that the cause of accident was short circuit in the engine. It was found that the bus did not have road fitness certificate and a case has been booked against the management.
