​Hyderabad: A 70-year-old remand prisoner at Chanchalguda central jail here died of cardiac arrest on Sunday. The deceased, N Shankar Rao (70), was arrested by the Saidabad police on charges of domestic violence under Dowry Prevention Act after his daughter-in-law Susrutha (30) committed suicide.

Shankar, a resident of Poosala Basthi was lodged in Chanchalguda central jail on September 12. On Saturday night, he suffered cardiac arrest and died in the jail. The jail authorities informed about the death to his relatives and also his wife and son who are also lodged in the same prison.The jail authorities informed the Bahadurpura police about the incident and a case has been lodged under Section 176 of the CrPC (custodial death) for probe.

According to police, Susrutha had used water heater for a long time on September 11. After knowing about this, her husband Mohan dragged his wife out of bathroom and had beaten her in front of other family members. Mohan did not allow his wife even to get dressed.

Humiliated by the incident, Susrutha sent a message to her father and sister on ‘WhatsApp’, saying that her husband was harassing her, and committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling. Based on the complaint lodged by her father, the Saidabad police had booked a case against Mohan and his parents. The police arrested the trio under sections 498-A 306 of the IPC and sections 3, 4 and 6 of the Dowry Prevention Act.
