Karimnagar: Irate relatives of a youth who committed suicide due to alleged police harassment attacked a police station in Karimnagar on Wednesday. Tension prevailed in Manakondur village as a group of people attacked the police station and vandalised furniture, CCTV cameras and damaged a police vehicle.

This followed the suicide of Shravan, 23, who was one of the five youths, who were asked to come to the police station on Wednesday after they allegedly abused and clashed with a policeman during Dasara procession on Tuesday night.

The youth were arrested but let off with a warning. The police also asked them to come to the police station the next morning. Shravan went home and committed suicide by hanging. Angry villagers then took out a procession with the youth’s body and reached the police station demanding action against the policemen responsible for his suicide.

Some of the protestors attacked the police station. They also staged a sit-in on the Karimnagar-Warangal highway, disrupting traffic for over two hours. Taking serious note of Tuesday’s incident, Karimnagar SP V B Kamalasan Reddy suspended SI Vamshi Krishna and two constables Rajkumar and Naresh.

A case under relevant sections was registered based on the complaint given by family members of Shravan. At the same time, another case was registered for damaging the police station.
