Hyderabad: In a freak accident, a 21-year-old man was crushed to death by a lorry when he tried to escape from his attackers. This incident took place in Hayatnagar police station limits on Wednesday.

The victim, V Rajesh, 21, a resident of Banjara Colony in Hayatnagar, who worked as a catering assistant, was returning home after work. He stopped at a cigarette shop near Word and Deed School, bought a cigarette and tendered Rs 100 note, the police said.

The shopkeeper, Mohammed Nadeem, asked Rajesh to give a change of Rs 4 since the cost of cigarette was Rs 14 so that he could return Rs 90.

However, Rajesh replied that he had no change. This led to a heated argument between the two following which Nadeem called his brother Mohammed Habib saying someone was trying to assault him, the police said.

Habib arrived at the shop in no time along with three others and all the five began beating up Rajesh. A frightened Rajesh tried to run away by crossing over the road and did not notice the speeding vehicles, police said.

He came under a lorry that was coming from Pedda Amberpet and heading towards Hayatnagar and was crushed to death. Immediately, the attackers fled the place but the entire incident was recorded in the CCTV camera installed on the road, the police said.

The police shifted the body to Osmania General Hospital (OGH) for postmortem and registered a case against the five attackers including Nadeem and his brother Habib on charges of culpable homicide not amounting murder. Efforts were underway to nab the accused, the police said.
