Kodad: The Kodad rural police on Friday invoked Preventive Detention Act against a miller who repeatedly indulged in illegal transportation of PDS rice to various places from Kodad, via Kakinada Port.

According to Kodad CI Madhusudhan Reddy, Miryala Narsimha Rao, a resident of Kuchipudi of Kodad mandal, was running a rice mill in his village. Under the mask of paddy milling, he has been collecting PDS rice from the poor by paying Rs 7 to 10 per kg.

He would recycle the rice and fill them in bags and transport them out of the country through Kakinda Port. He has been doing this for the last three years. About 40 cases were booked against him in two Telugu-speaking States earlier.

It is learnt that by transporting a lorry load of recycled PDS rice, he was earning Rs 70,000. In a month on an average, he transports 15 to 20 lorries of recycled PDS rice to various places from Kakinada Port. The miller continued his illegal business activities despite warnings and counselling by the police.

Speaking to The Hans India, the CI said with prior permission from District Collector and Magistrate Surendra Mohan, a case was registered against Nageshwar Rao under Preventive Detention Act and he was detained.
