Hyderabad: Sleuths of the north zone Task Force on Saturday arrested five persons including a kingpin of an illegal international call routing hub that was being run from Barkas in Old City. The accused include Gulam Khaja Khan of Bandlaguda and his associate A Ganesh of B N Reddy Nagar, A Naresh of Nalgonda district, B Murali Krishna of Hayathnagar and J Sai Kiran of Yadadri district.

According to the police, Ganesh would procure SIM cards while Gulam Khaja operated the illegal telephone exchange. Misusing the internet bandwidth the accused had been receiving international calls terminating public switched telephone network and facilitating long distance international calls at cheaper rates thereby causing huge revenue loss to the department of telecommunications. These illegal systems are a threat to national security since it is not possible to track such phone calls, police said.

Police seized VOIP device, router, computer and 853 SIM cards of various services providers, cash worth Rs 3,400 and motor cycle from the accused. According to police, Gulam Khaja and Ganesh were arrested along with some other accused in 2014 by Hayathnagar police for the same offense. However, the duo started the illegal call routing operations again in 2016 to make easy money.
