​Visakhapatnam: Craze for taking selfie claimed lives of two teenagers, as they drowned in sea at Jodugullapalem beach on Wednesday. Three others, who also fell in the waters, swam to safety. The beach was isolated and there were no life guards or fishermen at the time of the incident.

Five childhood friends -three boys and two girls all students of Intermediate in various colleges-from Madhurawada area in the city went to Joddugullapalem beach at about 7 am.

According to survivors’ accounts K Amrutha (17), DM Kalyan (18), Anil (18) and Rajesh (18) were standing on the rocks in the beach clicking selfies, while one Srinidhi fearing water stayed back. While taking pictures, a big wave lashed the rock and swept off all the four friends.

Fortunately, Anil and Rajesh escaped by clinging to the rocks, while Amrutha and Kalyan drowned. While body of Amrutha washed ashore at Sagarnagar beach, search operation is on to trace Kalyan. Arilova CI Ch Tirupathi Rao said that Amrutha was a first year Inter student of Visakha Valley School and Kalyan was a second year Inter student of a private college in the city.
