Two people died in a mishap at Mathangimetta area in Gopalapuram mandal in West Godavari district on Monday. According to police, Thota Haribabu (23) of Ammagarpalli, Aswapuram mandal, Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana, who was a cleaner boarded the lorry along with a driver and loaded sand at Polavaram early morning.

​Eluru: Two people died in a mishap at Mathangimetta area in Gopalapuram mandal in West Godavari district on Monday.

According to police, Thota Haribabu (23) of Ammagarpalli, Aswapuram mandal, Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana, who was a cleaner boarded the lorry along with a driver and loaded sand at Polavaram early morning.

They were on their way to Hanuman Junction to unload the sand when their lorry collided head on with another lorry going with cement load from Jaggayyapeta to Gandepalli.

Driver Morakonda Rammohan Rao of Patiala village in Kanchikacherla mandal of Krishna district and cleaner Haribabu sustained severe injuries in the mishap. Haribabu was stuck in the mangled lorry.

The police after hectic efforts brought Haribabu out of the cabin and shifted both the injured to Gopalapuram primary health centre. However, both of them succumbed to injuries at the PHC.

The driver of the other lorry sustained minor injuries. Haribabu is survived by wife and 3-month-old boy. Ramamohan Rao is survived by wife and three children. Gopalapuram SI V Lakshminarayana registered a case.

Following the accident, the traffic on Gopalapuram-Kovvur and Gopalapurm-Polavaram routes was disrupted for over two hours. The police later restored the traffic.
