Mahabubabad: The district taskforce police on Tuesday arrested a BAMS doctor at Kuravi mandal headquarters for conducting pre natal sex-determination tests and performing abortions.

The accused was identified as 52-year-old Raparty Srinivas of Kuravi. Following a complaint by Deputy District Medical and Health officer P Venkata Ramana, the Superintendent of Police N Koti Reddy directed the task force personnel to carry out raids on Swetha Nursing Home being run by the accused.

The SP, in a statement, informed that the accused medical practitioner lacked required qualifications to perform scanning and was illegally conducting sex determination tests along with abortions. The affair was going on for several years.

When the raids were conducted, reports of four women who came for sex determinations tests were found at the clinic. Of the four women, pregnancies of two women were aborted and two others were prepared for abortion, he said. An ultra sound scanner was seized from the hospital.

The accused medical practitioner Srinivas was booked under the provisions of Medical Act and PD Act and was remanded to judicial custody.

He was booked under Sections 417, 420, 313 of IPC and Sections 2 and 3, 2(3) of Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971, Section 15(3) of Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and PC PNDT Act 1994. It was said a case against Srinivas was also booked three years ago for conducting abortion and its trial was going on.
