Rainwater desiltation: 12 more contractors arrested for fraud
City police on Monday arrested 12 more contractors for their involvement in the scam related to de-siltation of rainwater drains in the central zone. Earlier, the Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths had arrested 18 contractors and 13 engineers of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on similar charges.
Hyderabad: City police on Monday arrested 12 more contractors for their involvement in the scam related to desiltation of rainwater drains in the central zone. Earlier, the Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths had arrested 18 contractors and 13 engineers of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on similar charges.
According to the police, the GHMC had entrusted the work of desiltation of rainwater drains in the Central Zone to 18 contractors. As per rules, the contractors needed to submit the detailed bills relating to the works and also the vehicle numbers that were used to transport the silt removed from the drains.
However, the contractors did not execute the works, but submitted fake bills along with some fake numbers of the vehicles. Suspecting something fishy, the GHMC authorities verified the documents only to find that most of the vehicle numbers belonged to two-wheelers, auto-rickshaw and cars.
The contractors showed as if the silt weighing seven tonnes was transported by vehicles, but it turned out to be false. Soon after detecting the fraud, GHMC authorities lodged a complaint with the Central Crime Station (CCS). Further investigations are underway, police said.
