Five people, including four Spanish nationals, were killed in a road accident in Chittoor district on Saturday. The accident occurred at Edigaplli village on Plamaneru-Karnool National Highway, 110 km from here, when the tempo van in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry.

Tirupati: Five people, including four Spanish nationals, were killed in a road accident in Chittoor district on Saturday. The accident occurred at Edigaplli village on Plamaneru-Karnool National Highway, 110 km from here, when the tempo van in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry.

While the driver of the van was killed along with the four Spanish nationals, five other Spanish nationals were injured in the incident.

The injured were shifted to a Bengaluru hospital, a police official said. They victims were identified as Vicente Preze (55), Fransico Pedrosa (50), Josefa Morana (55), Nieves Lopez (52) and Tempo driver Shadik (50).

The Spanish nationals were heading to Puducherry after visiting the Rural Development Trust (RDT), a philanthropic organisation, in Anantapur district. They were undertaking various service activities in the district through under the RDT.

Madanapalle Sub Collector Vetri Selvi rushed to the spot within an hour and took up relief measures. District Collector PS Pradyumna and SP Rajshekar Babu also visited the spot and enquired about the mishap. They instructed the police and medical officials to provide immediate relief measures.

Expressing shock over the accident, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to contact Spain's embassy in New Delhi and gather details about the victims.
