Hyderabad: A 33-year-old pharma company employee was arrested at Balkampet SBI ATM centre on Monday on charges of cheating old and innocent persons. The accused allegedly approached gullible people on the pretext of helping them withdraw money from the ATM. The police recovered Rs 2 lakh and five tolas of gold ornaments from his possession.

Addressing a media conference here on Monday, West Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Venkateswara Rao and Panjagutta Assistant Commissioner of Police Venkateswarlu said that his modus operandi was to rob the aged and innocent visiting ATM centres of their debit cards by issuing duplicate cards as a way of helping them withdraw money from the ATM.

Later, he would withdraw money from their accounts and shop gold ornaments using their debit cards. The accused was identified as Veeraiahchary (33), a resident of Kukatpally from Veerannapalem of Prakasam district.

The police had arrested him in 2016 for indulging in such offences under the Lalapeta and Kottakota police station limits of Guntur. Upon release from the jail, he reached Hyderabad six months ago and took recourse to his old ways.

He cheated two under SR Nagar police station limits, four in Sanatnagar police station limits and one person each under Miyapur, Chandanagar, Petbasheerabadpolice station limits and swiped money from their bank accounts and bought gold ornaments.

The SR Nagar crime branchpolice identified the accused with the help of CCTV footage and recovered gold ornaments and cash from him.
