22-year-old woman shackled in chains by family in Jagitial

A 22-year-old woman was kept in chains by her own family was rescued by her neighbours in Jagtial town on Wednesday.

The family members claimed that the woman was mentally unstable and hence was tied with iron chains.

The woman, Chityala Geeta, residing in Vani Nagar area, was found crying in front of her house as her hands were tied with an iron chain.

Upon probing, Geetha told the neighbours that she was being tortured by her brothers and sisters-in-law, who made her do all the household chores.

She attempted to run away from home but they tied her hands with an iron chain and locked it behind her back.

Geetha lost her father a few years ago and had been living with her brothers since then.

The neighbours with the help of local municipal councilor took her to the police station and removed her chains. When the police summoned her brothers and questioned them, they claimed that Geetha had been mentally ill since she was 11 years old. They told the police that she used to hurl stones at people and that they spent a lot of money on her treatment.

The police have sent the woman to the hospital to get her checked and if it is found that her family members tortured her, action will be taken against the brothers.
