Hello, my name is Sisir. I'm currently studying in the 12th grade of BiPC stream. I'd like to know about the different fields and courses I could consider to pursue after my 12th. I'd be interested in knowing about the different courses available (other than medicine).

This ever expanding field of science calls for an interest in bio science and requires an inquisitive, explorative and innovative mind. It demands objective thinking and a systematic and methodical approach. This field demands a continuous learning and knowledge up gradation.

Some of the options other than medicine are:

Biomedical Scientist/Engineer: It is an application of engg to medicine. They work with other health care professionals including physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians. Do a B.Sc. in Biological science and then an M.Sc. in Biomedical science

Botanists: Concerned mainly with the study of plants and plant life. Do a B.Sc. and then M.Sc. in Botany.

Environmental Scientists: One of its specialised fields is: Environmental planning, which involves planning, designing and developing systems and procedures to counteract the pollution. Options are open to work in media houses like newspaper, magazines and journals as science journalists. After a B.Sc. masters in Biology/Environmental Science would do.

Fishery Scientist: A study of fish and fauna, the research projects mainly focused on the effects of human activities on aquatic systems. A major branch is Aquaculture, involving farming of aquatic organisms in natural or controlled marine or freshwater. A B.Sc. in Zoology and then M.Sc. in Fisheries or Bachelor of fisheries and followed by M.F.Sc.

Food Technologists: After a B.Sc. in Biological Science, do a PG in Food Science/Applied Nutrition/Food and Nutrition. Or, B.Sc. in Home Science and a M.Sc. in Home science with specialisation in Food Science/Applied Nutrition/Food and Nutrition.

Agricultural Scientists: A B.Sc. in Agricultural Science and then M.Sc. in Agricultural Science /B.Sc. in Botony and then M.Sc. in Agricultural Science.

Forestry: A B.Sc. in Forestry/Zoology and then a M.Sc. in Forestry/ Life Sciences/Wild Life Biology. Or after a B.Sc. in Zoology/Botany/Agricultural Sc join the Indian Forest Services/State Forest Services.

Geneticist: B.Sc. in Biology and then M.Sc. in Biotechnology/Biomedical Sc/Genetics/Molecular Biology. Horticulturist: The four main specialisations in this field are: Promology, Olericulture, Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture. B.Sc. in Horticulture/Agriculture and then M.Sc. in Horticulture/Agriculture with specialisation in Horticulture would do.

Marine Biologist: You can enter this field by doing a B.Sc. in Zoology with chemistry/Botany/ Biochemistry and then do M.Sc. in Marine Biology.

Microbiologist: Work in varied settings such as universities, hospitals, industrial labs, agricultural companies, biotechnology companies, food or beverage companies, oil companies, and the government. B.Sc. in Biology and then M.Sc. in Molecular biology.

Medical Lab Technologists: B.Sc.in medical technology such as B. M. L. T. (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology) or D. M. L. T. (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology) and then acquire experience through the clinical training programmes or internship to get an exposure in this field.

I just completed My BE from Manipal Institute of technology in Mechatronics, but Im really interesting in joining as an Aircraft maintenance Engineer. Is there any way to enter into this field with my degree? If so how? Also could u list the colleges where I could do my masters? Thanks, - Allister

AME is neither a degree course nor a diploma but is a training program. If you have a strong desire to work in the aviation sector, then you have a choice of either doing a B-Tech in Aeronautical or Aerospace engineering or AME after your UG. Not only the pilots and aeronautical engineers but also Aircraft maintenance engineers play a vital role in the industry.

An AME authorises you to inspect the aircraft and certify its fitness for being flown. Therefore, it is an indispensible role in this sector, and hence gets an attractive salary. Moreover, as more and more airlines start operations in the private sector, the demand for an AME will also increase concurrently.

Eligibility:

12th pass with optional, math’s, physics, chemistry

Graduates in science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

Any higher qualification in science with Physics, Mathematics or chemistry

B.E. or equivalent qualification in related branch of Engineering

It is a rigorous 3 years course with two and half in house and 6months on the job training in any DGCA approved maintenance organisation.

It is a 3years full time course and you need to score above 75 per cent for all core subjects to stand a higher chance of being shortlisted.

You then become eligible for the Basic Aircraft Maintenance Training Certificate, for which you need to write the examinations conducted by the DGCA. After clearing the exam you will be awarded the DGCA- AME license. You will receive on the job training while taking the exams conducted by DGCA

Later, obtain a regulatory license or approval on a type of aircraft, i.e. for an Airbus or Boeing; you have to obtain an individual license to service that particular type of aircraft. There are a lot of institutes in India that offer this course. Refer site: www.dgca.nic.in

As you already have a BE degree then you are eligible for M E (AME).

Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology, GST Road, St. Thomas Mount, Chennai offers an M-Tech Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

It is a full time 2years PG course and the eligibility criterion is a Bachelor’s in Aeronautical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering with first class or its equivalent.

It provides training in the operations and maintenance of aircrafts and helicopters in terms of structures, systems and engines. The course gives a familiarity with the Civil Aviation regulations of Light and Heavy Aircraft category.

The placement cell of HITS boasts of placing the candidate in organizations such as:

  • AIR INDIA
  • HAL
  • INFOTECH
  • Mahindra and Mahindra
  • SPICE JET
  • TAAL
  • GO AIR
  • INDIAN AIRLINES
  • DGCA
