Detract means to take away something from someone, diminish the worth or value of someone’s quality or achievement; belittling, reducing, diminishing, lowering the value or worth or reputation of someone or something. The construction activities in the fringes of cities like Hyderabad, Delhi and other metros across the country have detracted the rural beauty. Nothing could detract the reputation of Atal Behari Vajpayee during his stint in politics which began in 1950s.

Political detractors can often be paid in one or the other guise. Noise can distract many people from sleeping but many people put up with it in India!

Parents advise their children not to be distracted from studies. The distractions in the eyes of parents can be drinking, going out with friends, smoking and hanging out with his or her friend. Politicians, particularly those in the ruling party, can distract the nation from their failures but the media has to be vigilant.

We need to distract ourselves from unpleasant situations and conditions to rather pleasurable and pleasant situations and conditions. People try to distract themselves from bad habits by staying with the family or pursuing hobbies. The fans of one team can distract the other team in a football or cricket match but the players have to stay focused.Sadhus and sadhvis have the ability to rise above the material distractions of life and concentrate on soul and divinity. But well established sadhus and sadhvis have detractors who brand them as bogus gurus. The ace tennis player said she lost the game because some spectators distracted her by making weird sounds.
