What is Chandrayaan. The Indian Lunar Exploration Programme known as Chandrayaan is an ongoing series of outer space missions by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The programme incorporates a lunar orbiter and future lunar lander & rover spacecraft.

The Chandrayaan-2, India’s second mission to the Moon, has Orbiter, Lander and Rover configuration. It is planned to be launched during 2017- 2018 timeframe by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, informed MoS (PMO) Jitendra Singh in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The Indian Lunar Exploration Programme known as Chandrayaan is an ongoing series of outer space missions by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The programme incorporates a lunar orbiter and future lunar lander & rover spacecraft.

Chandrayaan-I, India's first lunar probe, was launched by the ISRO in October 2008, and operated until August 2009. The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor. Launched aboard a PSLV-XL rocket, it was a big success for ISRO as the Moon Impact Probe, a payload on board the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, discovered water on the Moon. The mission also performed several other tasks such as mapping and atmospheric profiling of the Moon. The Chandrayaan-2 will incorporate spacecraft capable of soft-landing on the Moon and will also deploy a robotic rover on lunar surface.

The data from Chandrayaan-1 indicated the presence of hydroxyl and water molecules on the lunar surface. Further, the Mini-Synthetic Aperture Radar (Mini-SAR) instrument of Chandrayaan-1 has indicated existence of sub surface water-ice deposits in the base of the craters of permanent sun shadow region. ISRO and Russian Federal Space Agency (ROSCOSMOS) have been pursuing Chandrayaan-2 as a joint mission under which, ROSCOSMOS has the responsibility for the Lander and ISRO has the responsibility to realize the Rover Module, Orbiter and the launch by GSLV.

Subsequently, based on the recommendations of an integrated programmatic review conducted at ISRO, Chandrayaan-2 has been reconfigured with an Indian Orbiter, Lander and Rover for in-situ investigation of the lunar surface. The revised Chandrayaan-2 project with Indian Lander is currently under process in ISRO for approval by the government. Based on the assessment of the progress, the project is likely to be completed by 2016-2017. The Chandrayaan-2 is an unmanned mission to Moon. There is no immediate plan for manned mission to the Moon.
