Hyderabad: Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a scientific society of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications and information Technology has launched a PG Diploma in System Software Development (DSSD), in its Hyderabad campus.

DSSD is a unique course, which is designed with appropriate modules for system level programming. System software has to be reliable, robust, fast performing, memory efficient and free from security vulnerabilities. Developing this kind of software is a challenging task, because it is difficult to master in system level programming and also knowledge of system internals is required.

Moreover quality (time, memory efficient and robust) programming skills are required and bugs in system software are more expensive. There is a gap between academia and industry requirements in this specific area of software development. Manpower having these skills is scarce and there are not many practical oriented training courses, whereas demand for these skill sets is fast growing in the areas like Cyber Security, Telecommunications, Cloud Computing, High Performance Computing, Mobile Computing, Ubiquitous Computing, Medical Equipments, Operating Systems, Databases etc.

Also, these days virtualization layer has become an important system layer in all IT systems and usage of wide range of operating systems in embedded devices and applications containing smaller operating system footprint is growing. System level knowledge helps to understand the application and hardware interactions. Understanding the system call interface of operating system and operating system internals is also required in writing efficient application specific libraries and application programs.

Knowledge on Operating system features like concurrent programming, resource sharing and management, flexibility through separating the role of mechanisms and policies, buffer management, module level interfaces, robustness, performance, security and protection will help in developing better applications. Keeping this in view, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Hyderabad has designed a course titled “Diploma in System Software Development” (DSSD) targeting students who are keen in learning system level programming skills.

This course gives an opportunity to carryout in-depth system level programming with a focus on low level programming skills, Internals of Windows & Linux operating systems and system programming, kernel and device drive programming on Windows and Linux operating systems, parallel programming, security engineering, mobile computing & Android Programming. Student has to deliver a seminar and also need to execute a project related to system software in Cyber Security, Mobile Computing, and High Performance Computing etc as part of this course.

R&D team working in Cyber Security contributes for this course. Students will be selected based on the national level entrance test. This course was successfully conducted with an excellent industry acceptance. Companies like Honeywell, HCL, Embedded Infotech, Fortuna, MagnaQuest, Teradata, ATI (G D Mirco/AMD), Catalytic Software, C-DAC R&D, IMISoft, Impiger, INTOTO, NCR Corporation, Papyrus India limited, Satyam, Tata Elxsi, Mobis India Pvt Ltd, KPIT Technologies, HSBC etc selected DSSD students from the previous batches.
