Considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage, Kailash Manasarovar Yatra began from June 08 and will go on for two months. It is also considered to be one of the most difficult treks in Asia. The Yatra will be conducted between 08 June and 09 September, 2015. Lake Manasarovar situated about 2000 kms from Lhasa is world’s highest freshwater lake.Known as Lake Manas Sarovar in Sanskrit and Mapham Yutso in Tibetan this huge lake with the mirror like image of snow capped mountains in its crystal clear waters is just fabulous.

The lake is located at the southern foot of Mount Kailash, stretching up to 55miles (88kms) in perimeter it goes 330 feet deep and about 120 sq mi of total area. Lake Manasarovar has exceptional beauty that varies from crystal clear blue water near the shores and a deep emerald green colour at the center. The Ministry of External Affairs currently takes more than 1,000 pilgrims a year in 18 batches involving a 22-day journey and officials expect that the number of pilgrims could rise considerably once the new route is opened.

There are two different routes which pilgrims take - Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim. The Yatra involves trekking at high altitudes of up to 19,500 feet, under inhospitable conditions, including extreme cold and rugged terrain, and may prove hazardous for those who are not physically and medically fit. The Yatra through Lipulekh Pass is in 18 batches of 60 members each with total duration of about 25 days per batch. Estimated cost per person: Rs 1.5 Lakh.

The Yatra through Nathu La is in 5 batches of 50 members each with total duration of about 23 days per batch. Estimated cost per person: Rs1.7 Lakh. The new route of Nathu La pass this year will enable the pilgrims to drive all along, traveling first from Gangtok in Sikkim to Shigatse in Tibet, from where they can take vans and buses on the existing road to Mansarovar and Kailash directly. The new motorable route was added after a memorandum of understanding was signed between the two countries during Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s state visit to Beijing. There is a dedicated interactive website - http://kmy.gov.in - which has details about the Yatra.
