Enclave functions as a noun, and a verb. As a verb, enclave suggests being surrounded by something. The drama that followed brought blood and violence tothe enclave that Russia went to war to protect.The Vatican City, the city-state, is enclaved in the city of Rome: located in the middle or surrounded by Rome.


Nepal is enclaved by India and China, so is San Marino in Italy, and Lesotho in South Africa. The US-led air strikes tried to free the besieged Muslim enclave of Srebrenica. Enclave also refers to a place, or a group, or an entity that is different in character from others.


Earlier politics was considered an enclave for men but not anymore. The engineering department is traditionally a male enclave. Serving in the armed forces especially as soldiers is still a male enclave. Flooding in the enclave seemed to begin at Avenue C and worsened moving eastward.


Exclave is a portion of territory of one state completely surrounded by territory of another or others, as viewed by the home territory. It was first used in 1888; during the Victorian era. Exclave is a piece of land or part of country but not continuous with its mainland such as Gibraltar, Alaska or Northern Ireland.


An enclave is totally surrounded by foreign territory unlike an exclave. Russia’s Kaliningrad is an exclave on the shores of the Baltic bordering with Poland and Lithuania.
