Chandigarh: Haryana government ordered a vigilance probe on Thursday into alleged irregularities in interviews for the post of an assistant professor at Kurukshetra University in which the selected candidate, it has been claimed, was bafflingly awarded 22 marks out of 20.

An official spokesman said here that an inquiry has been marked to the state vigilance bureau on the basis of a complaint by one Dr Ajayab Singh, who had applied for the post of assistant professor of Hindi and appeared for the interview conducted by the varsity at Kurukshetra in September, 2012. In all, 151 candidates had appeared before the Selection Committee for interviews following which Dr Vandana Sharma was selected for the post.

The spokesman said that the complainant, on the basis of information obtained by him under the Right to Information Act, has alleged that Sharma was selected in an illegal and unfair manner. He also claimed that while the selected candidate had got only 22 marks out of 50 in the objective criteria of 'Academic Record and Research Performance', she was awarded 18 out of 25, the highest, in domain knowledge, which is co-related to academic record and research performance.

According to the spokesman, the complainant has further alleged that she was given an incomprehensible 22 marks out of 20 for the interview. He also claimed that despite receiving the highest 36 out of 50 for academic record and research performance, he was awarded only 11 out of total 25 on domain knowledge, the spokesman said.

The complainant said that the total marks awarded to him was 65 out of 100 whereas Sharma was selected with 67 marks out of 100. He claimed that she achieved that aggregate due to being awarded an unbelievable 22 out of 20 in the interview, the spokesman said.

As per the selection criteria of the varsity, out of the 100 marks, 50 marks had been kept for Academic Record and Research Performance while 30 marks had been fixed for Domain Knowledge and Teaching Skills with the remaining 20 marks for the interview. Kurukshetra University had sought applications for the post of assistant professor in Hindi in April, 2011, and the interviews for the same were held in September, 2012.
