The Union Cabinet has approved setting up and operationalization of six new IIMs at Amritsar (Punjab), Bodhgaya (Bihar), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Sambalpur (Odisha), Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), and Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) from their temporary campuses. The Mentor Institutes (tabled below) of the respective new IIMs have accordingly started taking admissions of students for Post Graduate Programme (PGP).

The academic sessions of these new IIMs are commencing from the current year (2015-16) itself. It is envisaged that new Institutes may begin with 140 students in their first PGP Course by selecting the students through Common Admission Test (CAT) being conducting by IIMs. Initial funds have already been released to the Mentor Institutes to make the new Institutes functional from the current year 2015-16 from their temporary campuses.
