Hyderabad: The State universities have decided to implement the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for the undergraduate courses from the next academic year. Due to lack of proper mechanism, preparedness and dearth of faculty, adoption of new system at the undergraduate level had been delayed by one year. However, the universities will implement the new system for the postgraduate courses from the current academic year.

According to Telangana State Council of Higher Education officials, all the universities have come on a single platform and sought permission to implement the scheme from the next academic year. The TSCHE also has written a letter to University Grants Commission (UGC) seeking permission on the same.

It may be mentioned here that the State government has agreed to implement the system during the all state education ministers meeting convened by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in January this year. The UGC has also made mandatory for all the universities to ensure implementation of the system from the current academic year and it also gave guidelines for the implementation.

In this regard, the government appointed a committee to look into the implementation. According to new system, the universities have to switch over to semester system for the undergraduate courses. Accordingly the universities have to mould the syllabus so as to fit the semester system.

An official of TSCHE said that when semester is introduced, examinations should be held once in three months. “For conducting annual examination, process starts three to four months prior to the exam. It will be difficult task in case of semester for conducting and evaluation of the answer sheets,” the official added.

Adding to it, the universities and colleges are facing dearth of faculty members. “For effective implementation of the system, the universities and colleges should have full-fledged teaching strength. But faculty positions in the universities and colleges are still vacant,” an official said.
