The competition which was held at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA recently, had 4 companies (international teams), each with 50 participants from all over the world. They were supposed to design a space colony in Mars that could accommodate a population of over 10,000 people. The event is organized every year by NASA, with the aim of helping students build their industrial skills and enhance their knowledge.

Students from Amity International School in Noida have won the prestigious International Space Settlement Design Competition, 2015, for their innovative design.

A team of 12 students from Amity International School in Noida has won the 20th Annual International Space Settlement Design Competition, 2015.

Noida: The competition which was held at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA recently, had 4 companies (international teams), each with 50 participants from all over the world. They were supposed to design a space colony in Mars that could accommodate a population of over 10,000 people. The event is organized every year by NASA, with the aim of helping students build their industrial skills and enhance their knowledge.


It puts high school children in the position of aerospace engineers, and lets them innovate. This is the first time that an Indian team has won the competition. The Amity team had 11 students from class eleven and one student from class ten. It was the only team from Asia to reach the final round.


They designed two main settlements and four outlying settlements to accommodate 24,000 people. This was accompanied by a transient of 3000 more people on Mars using a transparent material called ‘Aluminium Oxinitride’. The students worked on the design for 48 hours.


“It was a thrilling experience. From material to be used in designing the colony to waste and water management, external transportation, power generation, water recycling, we even proposed provisions for cargo handling, distribution of electricity and storage of excess of electricity and mode of transportation with the earth,” the youngest member of the team, Mudhit Gupta, was quoted saying.


It helped them work on various different aspects of designing, all at the same time, with crucial decision making like finding information about the quality of soil required for the location of the Mars settlement. These aspects included Automation Engineering, Operations Engineering, Human Engineering, and more. The students had been working hard for this since a year.


“We are proud to have such brilliant students who have made the country proud with their talent and hard work. We are inspired by scientist and visionary Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s work in science and technology. We had been participating in the competition for eight years now, but this year we finally made it to the top,” said Dr. Amita Chauhan, chairperson, Amity International Schools

The Amity team was in a company called ‘Vulture Aviation’ which included other teams from Latin America, North America, UK and USA.
