The UGC-HRD Centre along with Centre for English Language Studies, School of Humanities, UoH is running this unique refresher course which will conclude on September 1, 2015

The course coordinator Dr Shree Deepa speaking about the uniqueness of this course said that such a course would alter a teacher’s life forever about the language and general classroom. Participants from various central and state universities from across the nation confessed that in the first week itself they feel are geared towards inclusion in classrooms and are excited to have been attending such a unique course.

Many sessions are being conducted by persons with disabilities making it a truly inclusive Refresher Course on Inclusion. Sessions like the day long ‘Sign language workshop’ by Chitra and team, ‘Introduction to Braille’ by blind students of the university and lectures on ‘Social Diversity’ by Pavan Muntha a social activist, they said kept them excited and they agreed that it would surely alter their perspectives on teaching and learning.

The inaugural keynote of the three week long course was struck in the inaugural session by Professor Kalpana Kannabiran, Director, Council for Social Development, Hyderabad. Professor Kannabiran opined that despite the increasing inclusion of students from all social classes and locations, the presence of persons with disability in classrooms is often forgotten.

Further sensitisation was done through two sessions conducted by Dr Shilpaa Anand, Department of English, MANUU, Hyderabad. While discussing ‘Disability in classrooms’, Dr Anand pointed out that language used to refer to persons with disability is reflective of social attitudes towards disability and informed the participants about various ongoing debates on use of terms such as ‘differently-abled’ and ‘challenged’.
