The Central Institute of Tool Design (CITD), located in Balanagar Industrial Area, is a premier institute in Asia providing specialised training courses in tool engineering. Spread over nine acres, the institute was established in 1968 by GOI Society, Ministry of MSME, with the assistance of UNDP & ILO as an executing agency.

The objective of the institute is to meet the requirements of the industries in the field of Tool Design and Manufacture and to train the technical personnel in these fields. The institute has strong links with industries to impart practical knowledge by way of undertaking various advanced and technological tooling assignments.
It conducts advanced training programmes to Micro Small & Medium Enterprises. Shujayat Khan, principal director, MSME, Tool Room, CITD, says, “The institute manufactures and meets the infrastructural needs of defence establishments like HAL, ordinance factory and also manufactures machines used to make fire crackers.
The CITD conducts various technical courses throughout the year in short time (four weeks) and long term (four years). It offers diploma for various technical courses by conducting entrance test for those who have pass class 10 and above for admission.Courses include diplomas in Tool Design, Mold Making, Production Engineering, Electronics and Communication and Automation Robot.
Post graduation courses include M.Tech and ME. Students graduating from the institute are likely to get jobs in HMT, BHEL, DRDL, BDL, ECIL, Defence Ordinance Factory and other private companies.” In the last three years 32,562 students have passed out from the institute. Admissions are in progress for this academic year.
The institute has a well equipped tool room with sophisticated CNC machines like Double Column, Milling Machine etc. It also has a special library with vast collection of technical books in Tool Engineering, Automation, VISI & Embedded system fields and subscribes to various International journals like CIRP, Annals, American Machinist Journal of Engineering Materials & Technology ( ASME ) Precision Engineering (Japan) and Precision Tool Maker.
It also extends its services to developing countries by imparting knowledge and necessary skills to their personnel in the field of Tool Design, CAD/ CAM and low cost Automation Techniques.
