New Delhi: Old worn out tyres have been given a new lease of life by two art college students who hit upon the idea of upcyling them into colourful planters, furniture and other decorative accessories. The duo -- Kunal and Abhinandan -- from the Baroda College of Arts who now operate their own brand 'Kalatmak' recently put up their wares at an ongoing festival at the Dilli Haat here.

"The idea came when I was offered a heap of tyres to sit on. That's when I thought of making something unique out of waste and hence we made this," says Kunal. The have given planters fashioned out of old tyres exciting names such as 'Half Egg', 'Humming Bird' etc.

The tyres are painted in a hue of bright colours like red, blue, yellow, green and with jute being used to cover parts of the planters. The creators believe that the increasing flat culture has not affected the popularity of this unique innovation. The planters are being used in the balconies of the flats, bungalows and villas. "Nowadays not many people have the open space to satisfy their love of gardening.

So these planters and seaters are generally hung in balconies of flats and get adequate sunlight and rain water as well," says Abhinandan. The products, he says, have also been used for interior designing and have been widely used by various resorts, playschools and villas.
"We thought of doing something abstract and our innovation is a hit among playschools and resorts and people are really liking it," says Kunal. The garden accessories, seaters and planters range between Rs 1500 and go up to Rs 3200.
