New Delhi: A compilation of cartoons by the late RK Laxman and an autobiography of writer poet Amrita Pritam Singh are among the few books launched at the ongoing 21st edition of the Delhi Book Fair. "The first thing that I wanted see when I went to Mumbai in 1982…was not the Gateway of India but R K Laxman," noted cartoonist Sudhir Tailang said at the launch of his book

"An Uncommon Man – Compilation of RK Laxman Cartoons." Tailang feels that the period between 1940 to1970 was the golden era of cartooning as Laxman had given "voice to the voiceless masses." "The biggest contribution of Laxman towards political cartooning was that he gave it a professional touch. Laxman's 'Common man', when it appeared on the front page of a publication for the first time, did not speak a single word, but he gave voice to the voiceless masses of the country," Tailang said.

Recalling the golden era of cartooning during Laxman's time, Tailang said, "The tolerance level towards political cartooning has decreased today. Politicians now get cartoonists arrested. Many were massacred as we saw in France." The authors' corner held at Pragati Maidan also witnessed another book launch 'The Revenue Stamp – an autobiography of Amrita Pritam.'

Authored by Rahul Kansal and Doli Singh, Founder Director Delhi Poet's Club, the book seeks to understand the dilemmas of a woman poet while penning down her life experiences.Author Vinita Nangia who was present during the launch said, "I think sometimes poets try to create some kind of sadness in their life so that they can write better.

I think Amrita also experimented with the same. There is a lot of exciting things that Amrita talks about in the book." Talking about how the book came to be named thus Nangia said, "Khushwant Singh was responsible for giving the title of the book. He was roaming around and said to Amrita 'There is not much in your life which cannot fit on the back of the revenue stamp' and that is why it is called 'Revenue Stamp'."
