Hyderabad: Around 100 foreign students were awarded degrees, both graduate and post-graduate, at a well-attended function in the Osmania University (OU) campus on Tuesday.

The occasion was the Eighth Annual Graduation Ceremony organised by the University Foreign Relations Office (UFRO), in coordination with the Examination Branch. Apart from the students, senior OU officials were present in large numbers.

The chief guest on this occasion was Dr Mazen Mahdi Aidaros Al- Gafri, Cultural Counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Yemen, based at New Delhi.

During his welcome address, Prof C Venugopal Rao, Director, UFRO, OU gave a brief overview of the working pattern of his office and said that there has been a quantum increase both in the intake of students from abroad and the countries where they came from.

From 68 countries in the year 2000, there are now 4000 students representing 87 countries studying various courses in OU and its affiliated colleges, he informed.

The alumni are now doing very well in their respective nations, with 60 per cent of them in top corporate careers and a few working as diplomats and elected as ministers too, he added.

He affirmed that there would be no better university than Osmania to have such a diversity of foreign students elsewhere in the country.

In the academic year 2015-16, out of 1960 students admitted provisionally, around 1100, comprising 994 men and 154 women have already got enrolled, he said. Somalia has the maximum number of students in this batch with 260 students.

The admission process is currently underway and the popular choice seem to be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses, he informed. The impact of global political unrest, recession and visa delays have held up a few students he said.

Beginning 2010-11, the UFRO has introduced a group health insurance scheme for the foreign students, which has covered them for medical treatment to the extent of rupees two lakh each, he said.

For their part, most of the students are now well exposed to the cultural and religious diversity of India and they take part in many festivals like Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Diwali etc. he declared.

The chief guest, Dr Mehdi elaborated on the friendly relations between the two countries of Yemen and India and said over 3000 Yemenis, self-financed students, were studying in various colleges in the country.

He wished the very best to the passing out graduates and told them to study hard and avail the wonderful opportunities that India has given them to excel in their educational and professional lives.

He complimented the OU officials and the constituent colleges who have been very welcoming and supportive.Prof E Suresh Kumar, Registrar, in his cryptic address just asked the students to enjoy what they were doing and work to make their weaknesses weaker and strengths stronger to succeed in life.
