‘Professionally trained social worker are creating extra ordinary impact to combat poverty driven life of people’says Mr. Soumen Biswas Consultant, Prime Minister Rural Development Fellows (PMRDF) and National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).

Mr. Soumen was the invited speaker on the topic who interacted with MSW and Ph.D. (Social Work) students regarding different issues on livelihood interventions and opportunities for social work students.


The speaker discussed with students about the PMRDF and emphasized on how it can develop competency and skills to be sound professional. He also encouraged social work students to apply for this scholarship that is highly paying both in terms of financial gain as well as professional pursuits.


Youths are the most energetic assets of the country and they have ability to accept challenges and risks. Stressing on this Mr. Soumen opined that they should focus on doing something innovative for the service of marginalized and weaker section of the society and motivated students for starting their own organizations. He also ensured his supports and help for such initiatives.

On students’ query about financial support in the beginning, he informed students that institution like TISS have this facility in collaboration with Corporate bodies as their CSR initiatives, hence the Department have also potential strength in developing partnership with such bodies here in Hyderabad. This will create more opportunities for students towards taking independent and inquiring issues of the challenging issues on society.

In the third section of his discussion, the speaker discuss about NRLM and scope for trained social workers at different levels. In this regard, he appreciated the academic approach and methodology of the Department of Social Work and more specifically he highlighted the practical orientation through skill lab.

Mr. Md Israr Alam, Faculty In charge, Guest Lecture, presented the welcome note to invited speaker and the audience and also introduced the topic. Dr. Md Aftab Alam facilitated and moderated the discussion.

Presence of Dr. Md Shahid Raza, Associate Professor and Dr. Rafat Aara, Guest Faculty, Department of Social Work made a significant contribution to the discussion as they raised crucial issues regarding Students ‘skills in livelihood sector.

Prof. Mohd Shahid appreciated the efforts of social work team including teachers and students in making objectives of social work teaching successful. He emphasized the importance of such lectures in orienting students about field requirements, realities and job opportunities.
