Last month I was fortunate enough to pay a visit to Aligarh Muslim University, I had plans to go for research studies and luckily qualified the written test. But, this sojourn at AMU was more of an experience than that of examination.

It is the dream of every scholar, every student to be a product of this almamater, and why shouldn’t it be? After all the foundation was laid by the great Sir Syed Ahmad Khan himself! Situated in the small state of Uttar Pradesh, this university is one of the most prestigious and reputed universities of world. With thousands of national and international students enrolled in this varsity, it has become an epicenter of higher education.

It has produced scholars who have brought laurels to the country in general and university in particular. Students in thousands are rejected every year because they do not meet the standards set by the university.

In spite of all the achievements to boast off, I could sense some loopholes that need to be covered. The hostel allotted to the students especially girls of PG studies, desperately needs a repair. It looks more like a slum than a hostel. With pathetic toilets, broken washrooms, unhygienic mess, suffocating and overcrowded rooms, students find it hard to concentrate on their studies.

The mercury shoots to 50 degrees in summers, but the poor students have to survive under creepy fans, no coolers are provided by the university! I completely understand that one has to compromise a lot when it comes to studies, that too in hostels, I myself have spent 5 years in a hostel, but what I saw was pitiable! Girls need hygienic conditions considering some factors, even a kid knows that, but I guess the authorities are oblivious of the fact!

Had it been any XYZ university, I wouldn’t care a button, but with a university like AMU, which is a brand itself, such negligence is totally unacceptable. I appreciate some of the places I visited like Maulana Azad library was a place to be. I could see scores of students of varied age groups taking the maximum benefit of it, besides there is an online journal room where scholars get all the material for their papers. The ambience was very calm and soothing and it really touched my soul, but the authorities certainly need to paint some buildings and give them a fresh look. Young generation finds it hard to compromise on quality and hygiene and it is logical also, so I request the concerned authorities to pay attention and do the needful.
