Book reading sessions, a day without school-bags and the hum-drum of daily curriculum, and address by a noted scientist marked the 84th birth anniversary celebrations of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, at the Swami Vivekanand High School and Junior College and Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT) run by Vivekanand Education Society (VES) at Chembur.

As per the direction by the state government that the birth anniversary of Dr Kalam should be observed as ‘no-bags’ day, students brought non-academic books of their choice to school.
Commenting on the need to instill the ideals of Dr Kalam in young children, Ms. Bina Gole, Principal, Swami Vivekanand High School said, “the greatness of Dr Kalam was his simplicity and a humble attitude towards his peers and fellow countrymen. His momentous achievements in the scientific arena and his ascension to becoming the President of India did not in any way uproot him from the ideals which formed the core of his existence. Here was a luminary who was committed to seeing the young generation usher in an India which was scientifically evolved, religiously united and politically balanced. The greatest tribute to such a noble soul would be to imbibe the virtues of humility, a scientific attitude and a commitment to the steadfast uplift of the deprived sections of society.”
Addressing students of VESIT on the need to develop a scientific bent of mind amongst the young generation, noted scientist Mohan Apte stated, “routine learning is not going to enhance the problem solving capacity of the younger generation, though it may gain marks but not knowledge. In order to counter contemporary modern challenges, a scientific bent of mind needs to be inculcated in young children. Research based-skills and training should be made a part of the school curriculum from the early schooling stage. Dr Kalam should not remain a mere example to be cited in speeches but should be a blazing ideal for every student who dreams of a scientifically awakened India.” He further elaborated on the ancient scientific heritage of India and cited contributions of astronomers of yore like Aryabhata to the modern Indian scientific lineage
