Corporate people often feel that only when they have plenty of options and opportunities become successful. Is the ‘opportunity’ really help one to become successful? Opportunity may give someone a chance to explore and experiment but seldom guarantee or offer success. For success, one has to use the opportunity wisely & smartly and having mere opportunity in abundance will never reward anyone.

This simple message every corporate employee must understand and failing which they breed nothing but failure, grief and complain. Nature can offer best examples to the corporate to prove how plenty of opportunity can go wrong if the opportunity is not used wisely and smartly.

During summer months, the herbivores animals suffer least predation. But, during winter/rainy months, the lion will have sumptuous hunt. The herbivores animals will have plenty of food to eat during rainy season. When opportunity (food) is plenty, most herbivores animals get lost in the opportunity and easily fall prey to their predators. Further, the green cover also would help the predators to hide their identity until they move close to the prey.

But during summer months both food and water are scarce for all herbivorous animals. However they can easily spot the predators. Herbivores, when have least opportunity, naturally become more vigilant and watchful than when they have plenty of opportunity.

Naturally the herbivores become more smart and intelligent when there is poor opportunity (food). That makes the life of predators very tough and difficult. This is the general thumb rule, every life form in nature follows.

In any corporate, opportunity is more for MBA graduates (MBA from premier institutions than those from ordinary street business schools). Career and job opportunity are more in sales and marketing departments. On the contrary, the scope for R&D personals and Ph.Ds are very break in most corporate. Although plenty of opportunity is available for marketing and sales personals, the commitment and contributions of these people could be measured accurately in numbers. Because of the above either they loose their job easily or may have to change their job frequently. Opportunity always comes with limitations.

On the contrary, playing dirty politics and cheating are common in R&D set ups in most corporate. Opportunity is less for these people, hence they are very alert to safe guard their job at any cost. In the process, they often end up playing ‘third rate politics’ and scientific gambling in the corporate ecosystem than doing good research.

From the success point of view, the sales or marketing professionals are not as successful as R&D personals in retaining the job in the same corporate. The sales and marketing professionals instead of engaging in playing politics would explore opportunity elsewhere if they fail to garner respect that is due to them. They may sell/market automobile spare parts one day and food products the very next day. That is the diversity they have.

The management message to be understood is that having enough opportunity by itself may not offer success and only your smartness will pay. To minimize politics, create more opportunity and then ensure that it is not opportunity only performance wins.
