More than 150,000 indentured labourers went to South Africa from the Indian subcontinent in the 19th century. During the British colonial rule, many Indians from the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh went to Caribbean islands like Trinidad and Tobago as slaves and indentured labourers.

Many people from the Indian subcontinent have moved to African and South American countries as indentured labourers to work in the sugarcane plantations.
